Hosted by Paediatric Specialist Group

Calling all paediatric dietitians and students passionate about paediatric dietetics!

Mark your calendars for a transformative experience at the study day

This virtual gathering is tailor-made to equip you with cutting-edge insights and updates in paediatric nutrition management. Led by industry experts, our agenda boasts an array of enriching topics*, including:

  • Untangling the Headlines From the Paper - Tackling Nutrition Disinformation Through Understanding Methods and Data with Dr Duane Mellor.  The summary of Duane's talk will be using three case studies of research which has been recently published, the differences between the headlines, press release and the paper will be discussed, this will help to show we need to think carefully about what is claimed to be research data.  The talk will give tips and tricks to help dietitians to be able to quickly read and critique a paper, then use it to help inform evidence based practice.

More about Duane - Dr Duane Mellor is an award winning registered dietitian and science communicator (BDA Media Spokesperson of the Year 2021), who is a senior specialist paediatric diabetes dietitian at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and a visiting academic for Aston Medical School. Having recently returned clinical dietetics supporting children and young people living with diabetes he previously worked in medical education at Aston University. He was the Associate Dean for Public Engagement in the College of Health and Life Sciences.

  • Gestational weight gain and childhood obesity with Dr Julie Abayomi, Edge Hill University, Lancashire.  This presentation will highlight the importance of optimal nutrition during the first 1000 days of life for good health across the life course. It will discuss the importance of maternal diet and gestational weight gain regarding the promotion of optimal birth weight, then explores how low birth weight (LBW) and large for gestational age (LGA) infants can both have increased risk of obesity and non communicable disease later in life. The prevalence of LBW and LGA infants in the UK will be also presented. I will then go on to critically discuss gestational weight gain recommendations, maternal diet and some of the barriers regarding the promotion of healthy eating messages during antenatal care.
