Calling all dietitians working in primary care.

We are excited to welcome you to our first ever study day. We have come a long way since dietitians started to be integrated into primary care around 2020. This study day aims to showcase what we have done up until now and what the future holds for us working in primary care and first contact practice. 

We have speakers and sessions from across the country and across the five areas of the roadmap specialities (gastroenterology, malnutrition and frailty obesity, diabetes and paediatrics), we will also be running more general sessions on topics that will be helpful for all dietitians in primary care, with Networking, updates and sharing good practices to help you to make the most of these exciting and innovative roles.

An update on the FCP, enhanced and advanced practice BDA workforce projects with Tanya Rumney, Subject Matter Expert – Enhanced, Advanced and First Contact Practice Project.

About Tanya - Dietitian based in Chester and has worked with the BDA on several projects relating to the implementation of First Contact Dietitians in primary care. Tanya has worked as an advanced practitioner in primary care and supported the BDA/ NHSE to develop the ‘dietetic roadmap to practice’.

Sharing Good Practice: Leading the way…. A spotlight on supplementary prescribing as an FCD and why you should do it, with Susan Gallagher, First Contact Dietitian & Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner-Diabete, Chester Central PCN/Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust.

Summary of talk:  This talk will provide an overview & practicalities of prescribing as a dietitian in a PCN. There will be a focus on prescribing in diabetes. looking at outcomes and case studies. 

About Susan -  Susan  is a First Contact dietitian based in Chester Central PCN. Susan worked within a diabetes specialist team for many years before starting her PCN career in 2020.  In 2022 Susan gained her qualifications in First Contact Practice in Primary Care from the University of Central Lancashire. She is now in her final year of her Advanced Practice Masters. Whilst working in Primary Care means seeing a range of patients, her PCN's focus is on diabetes predominantly & also weight management.

Workshop: Our bread and butter - Malnutrition. Showcasing the role of an FCD in frailty and malnutrition, with Heather Klein - First Contact Dietitian.

Workshop: Have you got the guts for it? Showcasing the role of an FCD working in gastroenterology, with Rebecca Gasche, First Contact Dietitian, Non-Medical Supplementary Prescriber and Trainee ACP, Chester South Primary Care Network.

Summary of talk:   A review of current evidence, clinical challenges and ways of working in primary care.

About Rebecca - Rebecca has been working as a First Contact Dietitian since 2022. She has a background of gastroenterology and has recently completed her Advanced Clinical Practice masters, with the aim to use this to support her gastroenterology team as an ACP and ultimately move these skills into Primary care.

Workshop: Intermittent Fasting and Type 2 diabetes in Primary Care, with Sarah McDiarmid, NIHR PhD research fellow, University of Manchester. PCN Diabetes Dietitian, West Leeds Primary Care Network.

Summary of talk:  Sarah will give an overview of her research into the 5:2 diet and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and will debate the role of intermittent fasting as a tool for managing T2DM in primary care. Practical implementation of intermittent fasting will be discussed, and useful resources will be shared.

About Sarah - Sarah McDiarmid has over 10 years’ experience as a Diabetes Dietitian and Research Dietitian working for Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and now as a PCN Diabetes Dietitian in Leeds. In her former career, Sarah worked for Government and the NHS analysing and publishing data on the health of the nation. Her dietetic research has focused on intermittent fasting and low-calorie diets to aid weight loss and remission from type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Sarah is now an NIHR PhD Research Fellow at the University of Manchester developing and exploring the clinical value of a T2DM severity score, incorporating diet and health behaviours in addition to other traditional clinical markers.

Summary of talk: Equipping and Empowering Dietitians to embrace the leader within to transform their personal and clinical  leadership performance and outcomes!

About Claudine - Dr Claudine Matthews is a registered Consultant Dietitian in Health and Social Care in the UK and founder of Sickle Cell Nutrition Academy, a non-profit organisation with a mission to improving the sickle cell patients access and outcomes to nutrition, through tailored Nutrition, Education and Partnerships. Her work in sickle cell nutrition spans over 10 years during which time she wrote a number of articles on the topic, hosted and spoke at international Sickle Cell Conferences and was invited to write the inaugural national nutrition standards for Sickle Cell Disease. She was recently awarded the Dame Barbara Clayton Award 2024, by the BDA (GET) for her innovations in dietetic policy and practice development in sickle cell nutrition. Prior to this she worked in the NHS as a registered dietitian, and currently works part time as a primary care network dietitian in London. In addition to her work in sickle cell nutrition, she is passionate about personal leadership empowerment and has developed a number of personal empowerment frameworks to promote behaviour change helping people to maximise their personal, professional and academic potential.
