During this years’ study day, the committee are looking forward to sharing new advances in the world of oncology dietetics and thinking outside of the conventional box! Hear all about what’s new in CAR-T therapy, practical support for people with taste changes and how the microbiome is involved in our mouths as well as our guts. They also have emerging evidence of the role of cannabinoids for Cancer Anorexia-Cachexia and new research for nutritional practice post HPB surgery.

  • A matter of taste with Deborah Howland, Specialist Dietitian and Acute Team Leader, Torquay Hospital

    Summary of talk - providing an overview of interventions to improve oral intake in people with taste changes.

    More about Deborah - She has worked as a dietitian at Torbay Hospital in various specialities since 2004.  Deborah started working in my Head and neck cancer role in 2005.  Since then, she has watched advances in both treatments for people with head and neck cancer and the scope of dietitians and how our interventions can really help with quality of life.  Deborah has special interests in muscle health, plant-based diets and taste.
  • Oral Microbiome in Oncology with Neelam Rathod, Speciality Registrar in Oral Surgery and Ambareen Naqvi, Speciality Doctor Oral Surgeon, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

    Summary of talk - The oral cavity undergoes significant changes in cancer patients due to the effects of treatment, as well as alterations in their nutrition and oral hygiene habits. This presentation will explore the impact of oncology treatments on oral health and highlight the role diet plays in the development and progression of dental disease

    More about Neelam - Neelam is an Oral Surgery Registrar at King’s College Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trusts. After completing her degree and foundation training, she gained extensive experience over five years working in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, where she was actively involved in the diagnosis and clinical care of head and neck cancer patients. In her current role as a registrar, Neelam plays a key role in managing complex oncology-related cases, providing specialized care for patients undergoing oral surgical procedures.

    More about Ambereen - Ambareen is a Locum Consultant in Oral Surgery, who earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from King’s College London in 2010. Ambareen passed her Tri-Collegiate Membership in Oral Surgery examination in 2020. During the week, you will find Ambareen at Kings College Hospital working as a Locum Consultant Oral Surgeon.  Ambareen specialises in complex work-ups for oncology patients. With a passion for patient care and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those undergoing cancer treatment, she is dedicated to providing comprehensive surgical solutions that enhance the quality of life for patients. Ambareen combines clinical expertise with compassionate support, ensuring that each patient receives personalised attention throughout their journey.
  • Prehabilitation – an update on evidence and guidelines with Krishna Kholia Parmar, Macmillan Dietitian and Prehabilitation Project Lead, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

    Summary of talk - An overview of current evidence base in Prehabilitation, with a focus on Nutrition, and an update on the new Macmillan Prehabilitation guidelines coming in 2025.

    More about Krishna - Krishna works as a Macmillan dietitian and Prehabilitation project lead at University Hospitals Birmingham, and Chair of the BDA prehabilitation sub-group. Her current role involves setting up a new Haematology Prehab service. Krishna is involved in nutrition workstreams the development of prehabilitation guidelines for Gynaecology cancer, and the Macmillan Prehabilitation guideline update.
  • Dietetics in CAR-T – the facts and our experiences -  with Jo Ingram, Clinical Lead Haematology Dietitian Nottingham University Hospital and Abigail Dean, Advanced Practice Haemato-Oncology Dietitian, Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

    Summary of talk - : A brief overview of what CAR-T Therapy is, dietetic considerations for this and our experiences of working in such a new clinical area

    More about Jo -  She has been working in haematology since 2015 as a Specialist Dietitian.  Jo has a particular interest in Allografts, TYA and CAR-T Therapy. Jo has more recently been successful in getting the new Clinical Lead post so will be working on improving our dietetic services here at NUH. Jo is am also the Chair of the Haematology Subgroup of the BDA.

    More about Abigail - Abigail is passionate about haemato-oncology and particularly stem cell transplant having worked in this area for a decade. She is the lead Dietitian within the National Haematopoietic stem cell transplant unit in Scotland. She is actively part of audit and research within the MDT having had abstracts accepted at the British Society of Haematology and the European Bone marrow transplant conferences. She has also more recently completed her non-medical prescribing qualification to be able to prescribe parenteral nutrition within this patient group. In her spare time Abigail enjoys travelling, running and long walks with the dog!
  • Use of the BDA Oncology Specialist Group Education Grant to attend the International Congress of Nutrition and Dietetics 2024 with Maeve O’Shea, Specialist Haemato-Oncology Dietitian, Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
     

    More about Maeve - Maeve is a Specialist Haematology Dietitian at King’s College Hospital, London, with extensive experience in providing expert nutritional care to patients with haematological conditions. Maeve is deeply engaged in advancing the role of nutrition in oncology and hematology, both through clinical practice and research.  She has presented her research on an international stage at prominent conferences, including the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and the International Congress on Nutrition and Diagnostics (ICND). Maeve remains committed to improving patient outcomes and contributing to the development of evidence-based dietary practices in haematology.

  • The emerging role of Cannabinoids for Cancer Anorexia-Cachexia with Professor Barry J A Laird, Chair of Palliative and Supportive Care, Institute of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh. 

    More about Barry - Barry graduated in medicine from the University of Glasgow and completed specialist training in palliative medicine. He was awarded a prestigious National Cancer Research Institute fellowship and joined the University of Edinburgh in 2007 where he has remained. Working in the field of supportive oncology and starting cachexia research in 2010, he was awarded a fellowship from the European Palliative Care Research Centre (PRC).
  • Pancreatico-duodenectomy - nutritional considerations pre and post operatively with Mary Phillips, Advanced Clinical Practitioner / Senior Specialist Dietitian (Hepato-pancreatico-biliary surgery), Royal Surrey County Hospital.

    Summary of talk - Mary's presentation will cover an overview of the nutritional issues prior to pancreaticoduodenectomy, how this affects progress post operatively and what the long term nutritional consequences of surgery are.

    More about Mary - Mary is an advanced clinical practitioner in HPB dietetics, with over 20 years experience working with pancreatic patients. She is currently undertaking a PhD in the long term consequences of pancreatic surgery, and recently edited the Nutritional Management of the Surgical Patient book.
  • Diet and Immunotherapy Outcomes: The Role of the Gut Microbiome with Professor Tim Spector, Professor of Epidemiology at King’s College London and scientific co-founder of ZOE

    Summary of talk will cover:-
    An overview of the complex interplay between diet, our microbiome, and health.
    The evidence we have so far on diet and immunotherapy outcomes
    How we can harness the microbiome to improve treatment outcomes
