Sustainable September 2023

BDA SS website graphic.png

Every year we celebrate Sustainable September, promoting the benefits – to health and the planet – of a sustainable diet. For this year’s campaign we are looking at the savings that can be made by living and working more sustainably, from saving money but ultimately saving the planet!

We’ll be offering tips on tackling waste, incorporating affordable beans and pulses into everyday meals and reducing food waste. We’ll also be looking at improving the sustainability in packaging for oral nutritional supplements. We want to inspire you, get you thinking and encourage you to have sustainability high on your agenda.

Each week we’ll be sharing a key project that we as the BDA, our partners and our members are involved in and offering some useful tips, facts and figures along the way. All with the aim of reminding you how important this is.

We are currently writing our 3 and 10 year strategies. Sustainability will form a key part of these and by 2024’s Sustainable September we’ll be working towards some important BDA targets. Join us at this year’s AGM on 19 September to find out more about our consultation on this and how you can have your say on what the future of the BDA looks like.

How to get involved in Sustainable September?

  1. For those wanting to dive in deep to sustainability and to understand the role of a dietitian in this space, our Sustainable Diets Specialist Group has put together an incredible line-up of speakers for their event on the 12 September. Embedding sustainability into dietetics and nutrition is open to all members and can be attended in person in Birmingham or also via live stream. This really is not to be missed!
  2. Share your sustainable tips and the projects you are involved in on social media and tag us in. Use #BDASustainableSeptember.
  3. Make use of our public facing, evidence-based Food Fact Sheets on Sustainable Diets to support your messaging.
  4. Start a food waste competition with colleagues? Ask them to monitor what their most common foods are that are left in the fridge each week. What recipe can they make to use them up before they go bad? Give a prize to the best use of wasted food.
