CCSG Events

Looking for conferences or study days to attend over the coming year? Here are some ideas of events which may be of interest.

CCSJ NJ Journal Club - 13th December 2024, 12.30-1.30pm (virtual)

The Critical Care Specialist Group NJ team are excited to run an NJ journal club! We will be critically appraising the following article:

'Taylor SJ, Karpasiti T, Milne D. Safety of blind versus guided feeding tube placement: Misplacement and pneumothorax risk. Intensive Crit Care Nurs. 2023; 76:103387.' View the article

As this will be an interactive session, we ask attendees to read the article prior to the journal club so we can have as many members as possible contributing to discussions. There is also a Letter to the Editor related to this article, as well as a response from the authors (both referenced and available to access through the link above), should you wish to also consider these when reviewing the article.

We will be using the JBI critical appraisal tool for narrative reviews found here: JBI Critical Appraisal Tools | JBI

Introduction to Critical Care Dietetics

The very popular Introduction to Critical Care Dietetics course is back and has dates available after selling out last in 2023!

The course aims to improve your awareness of the dietetic and physiological principles that are essential to working in the critical care setting, whilst supporting you to develop the confidence required to autonomously work in this environment.

The course is divided into 2 days of pre-course learning via the BDA Learning Zone and a 1-day classroom event (virtual option available or face-to-face option at the BDA offices in Birmingham).

This course is aimed at those new to working in critical care, especially those working in isolation without a team of critical care dietitians to support them. It is aimed primarily at band 6’s and 7’s who have just moved into the specialist of critical care or having to provide clinical cover to this area. They will be working in the area but not experienced.

Topics covered broadly pertain to the following five themes:

  • International guidelines and unit protocols
  • Assessing nutritional risk, biochemistry and refeeding syndrome
  • Metabolic response, energy and protein targets, and effects of critical illness on nutritional interventions
  • Nutrition therapy routes: Enteral nutrition (EN) and Parenteral nutrition (PN), routes for EN and PN
  • ICU stepdown, handover and rehabilitation

See the BDA Event calendar for upcoming dates and the Introduction to Critical Care Dietetics page for further information about the course and to book your place.
