Sharon Madigan
Cara Sloss
Cara is a Clinical and Sports Dietitian, with over 10 years experience of working in the field. She has an MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition and is a practitioner on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr). Her passion for sports nutrition was driven by her own training and competition in athletics and she has a particular interest in fuelling endurance and ultra-endurance performance.
Cara is currently working as the sports nutritionist in the British Athletics Talent Hub based at Leeds Beckett University along with consultancy work with the British Athletes Paralympic Futures programme and freelance work with athletes from a variety of sports across the UK. In addition to this, Cara has a part time clinical dietitian role in the NHS in Leeds.
Vicky Newbold
Vicky works for the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) as Lead Performance Nutritionist for England and GB Hockey Senior Men’s and Women’s Squads, providing support in their ProLeague, World Cup and Commonwealth Games campaigns. In addition to supporting both squads on their road to the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024, she is also one of the Team GB HQ Nutritionists for the Games. She has an MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition from the University of Westminster and is a full practitioner registrant on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENR). Vicky also works with Chelsea FC Women’s team. In both environments, she delivers evidence-informed individual and squad performance nutrition plans, collaborating closely within the multi-disciplinary team, operations and logistics teams and Performance Chefs to provide performance-focused solutions in often challenging environments. In her private work Vicky has supported professional footballers, ballet dancers, weightlifters and endurance athletes and previously worked as a Health Coach on a digital behaviour change health program.
David Dixon
David is currently a senior lecturer in sport and exercise nutrition and exercise physiology at Writtle University College and has a varied applied work focus alongside his academic role. He is also SENr qualified and works with the SENr as an assessor on their accreditation pathways. With a background in sport science and nutrition, David has a particular interest in the practical application of sport nutrition and immunology in elite and extreme environments applying his knowledge and skills into a range of contexts including ultra-endurance runners and cyclists.
More broadly, his applied work spans both Olympic and Professional sport, including athletics and team sports. Having developed experience in delivering nutrition education programmes aimed at supporting youth athlete development. He previously been lead performance nutritionist for a premier league team and its Youth academy, as well as supporting high performance athletes at UEL and London Lions Basketball Club.
David brings a different perspective to the committee in being a professional member of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientists. David currently helps arrange sponsorship of events that the group organise.
Katie Ward
Kiri Pointon-Bell
Kiri is a Dietitian and SENr Graduate Registrant. Kiri gained just shy of 10 years experience working in Dietetics in a range of specialities across NHS hospital and community settings before moving to the British Dietetic Association to work as a Policy Officer within the Education and Professional Development Team. Since 2018 Kiri has been working as a Dietetics Lecturer at Birmingham City University also supporting the BSc Sports and Exercise course. Kiri currently works part time as a lecturer. After recently completing her MSc in Sports and Exercise Nutrition Kiri is working towards publishing a scoping review in the field of Breastfeeding in Sport in her spare time. She hopes to start working with athletes in the near future.
Beth Vickers
Beth's passion and curiosity for nutrition and sport goes as long back as she can remember; for Beth, it’s a celebration of what the body is capable of. After transferring degrees to pursue a career in the field, Beth graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University, 2020. Beth then went on to study MSc Sport & Exercise Nutrition also at Leeds Beckett and graduated gaining accreditation with the SENr and AfN. During Beth's studies, she was lucky enough to undertake applied experience with Castleford Tigers Rugby Scholarship team, England Rugby DiSE programme, and Leeds Rhinos Women who she is incredibly excited to continue to work with as a performance nutritionist. "It’s a very inspiring time to be a jigsaw piece in the development of women’s sport."
Alongside Beth's applied work, she has returned to Leeds Beckett as a part-time lecturer in Sport & Exercise Nutrition, as well as working in Bradford District Care Team as a nutritionist supporting NHS staff and patients with long COVID.
Beth is deeply passionate about learning and pursuing further study in supporting athletes with disordered eating and body image issues. Whilst she is only at the beginning of her career, she is immensely excited about the adventures, development and learning that lies ahead and grateful for the support and experiences so far!
Dr Steve Marshall
Steve is a practitioner registrant on the SENr and a senior lecturer in nutrition and exercise physiology Sheffield Hallam University. He has a BSc in sport and exercise science from Leeds Beckett University and follow a few years working in education and the food industry, returned to study his MSc in nutritional science at Northumbria University. Steve then started up a consultancy business as a personal trainer and nutritionist before being offered a dual role PhD with Sport England and Northumbria University, where he led the nutrition support for Team Northumbria and TASS. During his PhD, Steve also completed his PGCert in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Leeds Beckett and has been a member of the SENr ever since.
Louise Sutton
Louise is currently a principal lecturer in sport and exercise nutrition at Leeds Beckett University and has a diverse applied work profile alongside her academic role. With a background in sport science and clinical dietetics Louise has a particular interest in the practical application of sport dietetics in elite and extreme environments having applied her dietetic knowledge and skills into a range of contexts including Himalayan expeditions, Polar challenges, Atlantic rows and round the world solo-ocean racing record attempts.
With a more mainstream sport nutrition focus she has advised many elite sports professionals from a range of sports, both Olympic and Professional, including athletics, cricket, cycling, football and rugby. She is currently lead nutrition consultant for Leeds Rugby providing support to Leeds Rhinos Rugby League and Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Union, as well as the National Race Walking Squad based in Leeds.
Known for her very practical approach, Louise has extensive experience in delivering nutrition education programmes, particularly aimed at supporting junior athlete development. She currently holds a Deputy Chair position on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) Board with responsibility for Registration and Accreditation and has twice been awarded the British Dietetic Association Roll of Honour for her contribution to the development of the SENr.
In her role with the SNG Louise is keen to raise the profile of the group and that of the practitioners it serves. She will look to work with the committee to create continuing professional development opportunities for the membership that will raise standards of practice within the profession.
